Why Are Surface Treatments On Pharma Clean Room Cranes Important?

Posted on

When you choose pharmaceutical clean room cranes, you have to choose products which will work with your lifting and moving needs. You also need to find cranes which work in your space.

However, these aren't the only factors you should consider during the selection process. You should also pay attention to surface treatments such as powder coats, paints, plating, and galvanization. Why are these surface treatments so important?

Surface Treatments Reduce Particle Migration

A pharma clean room doesn't just need to be clean on a surface level, it needs to be completely clean and free from contaminants. You have to take care not to bring contaminants into the room or to use any equipment which might create them.

If you don't choose the right surface treatments for your clean room's cranes, then you can run into problems. If a crane doesn't have a suitable treatment for the room, its conditions, and the materials it handles, then it could create particulate problems.

For example, if your crane's surfaces will be exposed to moisture or chemicals, then they might start to break down. Untreated metals might oxidize and rust. When this happens, flakes of rust could fall into your products and contaminate them. So, you need to find a surface treatment which will stay intact under your clean room conditions.

Surface Treatments Make Cranes Easier to Clean

Clean room cranes need to be kept scrupulously clean. Surfaces which are hard to clean can become hosts to dirt, dust, and bacteria. These contaminants affect the hygiene and safety in the room and affect its integrity.

Look for surface treatments which are smooth and easy to clean down. Ideally, surfaces should be closed. They shouldn't have holes or seams in them. Remember that hygiene is particularly important in a pharma clean room environment, so surfaces which are naturally antimicrobial or which contain an antimicrobial coating are important here.

Surface Treatments Extend the Life of Cranes

Clean room cranes are sometimes exposed to damaging environmental materials and substances. They might have to deal with moisture, chemicals, and large volumes of oxygen, for example.

If a crane's surfaces can't manage these factors, then it might become damaged. For example, oxidization doesn't just  cause particulate problems, it also degrades the crane's surface materials. The crane won't last long if it starts to rust.
